Another year passes …

A New Year
And frankly, I’m sort of glad to see it go. It has been an eventful year for me, many of which I would have been quite happy without. I turned 50 – half a century and health wise it has been a disaster, a heart attack in the spring – a double bypass in the fall.

On the good side of things, my relationship with Gabino continues strong – my dog (after 14 years) is still with me – no one close to me (friends or relatives) died this year (my mother passed last year) – I made it through the entire year without a cigarette. Things could have been worse!

Ready or not, a new year is upon us and to welcome it I’m going out clubbing tonight for the first time since my operation. Hopefully 2006 will bring better things for everyone!

Calvin and Hobbes - snowmen
I don’t know how international the appeal of the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip was but its writer and illustrator, Bill Watterson, frequently had the impish Calvin create snowmen while out and about in winter. And seeing as it is now the season of snow (here in the northern hemisphere anyway) and we even have a bit of snow in the forecast here in Raleigh, I thought I would present some of the better strips Watterson produced that were of this theme.

Ennis del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) from Brokeback Mountain
It’s called Brokeback Mountain – I saw it mentioned on the Good Morning America news program and had to check it out. It has a web site and there are quite a few very favorable reviews out there: Ebert & Roeper say it “has Oscar nomination written all over it” and they give it “2 thumbs up” – Rolling Stone gives it 4 (out of 4) stars – Reel.com gives it 4 (out of 4) stars as well. The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times both gave it great reviews too. So, what’s it all about?

E-books – Finally better than paper!

Samsung i500 phone with eReader ebook program on Palm OS
I’ve always been a reader … there are hundreds of books on various shelves around the house and magazines are everywhere! But I haven’t bought a printed novel in years. Why? Because I’ve discovered how to make e-books readable!

Good news from my cardiologist!

Filed under: General, Health — Jim @ 10:42 am

Today I had my first visit with my cardiologist since my arterial bypass operation and he actually gave me good news. He said that everything seemed OK and he didn’t need to see me again for a year. I’m happy.
