The Stonewall Riots – 40 years ago

Filed under: General — Jim @ 8:31 pm

Stonewall
It was forty years ago today that the gays of New York City finally got fed up with being mistreated by the police. A raid on a local bar resulted in the crowd resisting and thus was born the modern gay rights movement. Well … it’s a lot more complicated than just that but in a nutshell that’s what happened.

We’ve made huge strides since those times but there is still a lot to be done before we achieve equality

More questions than answers

Filed under: Cancer, General, Health — Jim @ 4:07 pm

Well I got some information on what they found as a result of the surgery on Monday … nothing found. This leaves me with more questions and my first appointment with a cancer specialist. That’s another 2 weeks from now. I just love waiting and wondering.

Too fun not to share!

The cited original URL of this is no longer valid but I had to pass it on:

1.Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control.
2.Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. Infertile couples and old people can’t legally get married because the world needs more children.
3.Obviously, gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children.
4.Straight marriage will be less meaningful if Gay marriage is allowed, since Britney Spears’ 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.
5.Heterosexual marriage has been around a long time and hasn’t changed at all; women are property, blacks can’t marry whites, and divorce is illegal.
6.Gay marriage should be decided by people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of the minorities.
7.Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That’s why we have only one religion in America.
8.Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall.
9.Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract.
10.Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That’s why single parents are forbidden to raise children.
11.Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven’t adapted to things like cars or longer life spans.
12.Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a “separate but equal” institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages for gays and lesbians will.

No news at all …

Well the surgery got rescheduled for Monday so a pathologist could be on-hand during the procedure. All went well – and they even took out a tonsil for good measure but there still isn’t any news for me. I didn’t get to talk with the doctor at all yesterday and a call to his office today said they should be able to tell me something by Wednesday afternoon.

I hate waiting!

Not good news …

Filed under: Cancer, General, Health — Jim @ 7:49 am

Well I had my follow-up appointment with the surgeon yesterday and he didn’t give me good news. What they found was squamous cell carcinoma. He couldn’t say where it was or actually anything about it other than he felt it was in my throat somewhere. When I looked it up on-line almost everything just refers to skin cancer, but that isn’t what I have.

Anyway, I’m scheduled for another day surgery to see what they can find. He plans on taking a look see and gathering a few samples from my throat. He said he may also remove a tonsil while he is at it. It is scheduled for this Saturday. FUN!

The end of an era – and I’m going to miss it.

Filed under: General — Jim @ 6:47 am

Analog TV
Today marks the end of analog television broadcasting in the United States. Digital TV has been on everywhere for quite a while now but today they actually will turn off the old analog system. It will be missed.

I’m one of the hold outs. I still use off-the-air TV. I don’t have cable or a satellite system. The switch over to digital actually will mean something to me! Yes I have a nice new flat panel digital TV as well as a converter box for an older TV upstairs. I even have a real outside rooftop antenna … I am as prepared as one can be.

But it’s just not the same. With analog I could watch some of the stations that were outside my official viewing area – yeah the picture was bad but I could watch them if they had some program I really wanted to see. But no more with the digital system. When I was a kid living in Jacksonville, NC I remember watching TV late one night and actually receiving a station from Miami, Florida – a distance of some 600 miles. It was a rare occurrence to be sure but at least it was possible with analog – but no more with the digital system.

With digital it is perfection or nothing. I guess we are now stuck with it.

A Politician with ethics?

Filed under: Gay, General, Immigration, Politics — Jim @ 7:00 pm

Mayor Lown - gay republican
This one is almost too good to believe … but IT IS TRUE!

The mayor of San Angelo, Texas, has resigned just ten days after a landslide re-election victory to pursue his relationship with his gay partner, an illegal immigrant from Mexico. J W Lown was elected in 2003 as the city’s youngest ever mayor at the age of 32. He has been re-elected three times, gaining 89 per cent of the latest vote, held ten days ago.

Lown said he had chosen not to take the oath of office while “aiding and assisting” a person who was illegally in the country.

“I made the final decision when I knew it was the right decision to make for me and my partner and our future – and for the community,” he said. Lown hopes to eventually return to the US with his partner.

“I don’t know how long this is going to take. It could take months. It could take years, but I’m prepared to wait as long as it takes,” he said.
“It wasn’t a decision that any U.S. citizen should have to make,” former Mayor J.W. Lown said in an interview from Mexico. “I left a home. I left a ranch. I left a promising political career.”

Here is a politician that actually seems to be honest and to have ethics and he is leaving the country because he can’t be with his partner otherwise. A sad state of affairs when we lose promising talented people because of stupid laws.

Marriage equality

White Knot - Marriage equality

It’s time and I’m damn tired of the bigots that are against it hiding behind their religious beliefs in their arguments. Marriage is a legal state. It is not a Judeo-Christian religious ritual. Atheists can and do marry – Buddhists can and do marry – the Godless communists marry. It also isn’t reserved for reproduction of the human race. Sterile persons can marry – old persons well past menopause can marry.

WHY SHOULDN”T GAYS BE GIVEN THE RIGHT TO MARRY THOSE THEY LOVE?

Health news

No, this isn't a picture of me! It's just an example
This isn’t a fun subject. Last Tuesday I went into the hospital for the removal of a branchial cyst – basically a lump in the side of my neck. A straight forward operation … they put you completely under and slice it out – glue you back together and when you wake up, you go home. No big deal except for a few days of discomfort. Well that’s how it was supposed to go and indeed, how it seemed to go.

Star Trek (the movie)

Filed under: General — Jim @ 8:32 pm

old and new casting for Star Trek
Gabino and I went to see Star Trek tonight and I was very pleasently surprised by it. Good story, good casting and they held true to the Star Trek episodes (for the most part). Gabino, not being a Star Trek fan was a bit lost and didn’t much care for it.

Quiet for too long

I haven’t posted to my blog for a long time but I can’t stay silent any longer. I didn’t really lose interest but rather was waiting until I moved the blog (and some other websites) to a new hosting account. I just hasn’t happened so I’m back with all of my pent up opinions.
