  Kenko 3x Tele-converter

Here are some photos showing the effect of the Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 3x tele-converter when used on a Canon 20D equipped with the 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 L series auto-focus, image stabilized lens. The photos are as follows:
    First: The setup
Second: Lens at a focal length of 300mm
Third: Lens at a focal length of 100mm with the 3x tele-converter (300mm)
Fourth: Lens at a focal length of 400mm with the 3x tele-converter (1200mm)
The camera was mounted on a tripod so image stabilization was turned off. Auto-focus does not function with the tele-converter so photos 3 and 4 were manual focus. The lighting was natural on a somewhat overcast morning.

These images have been resized but that is the only processing done to them. You can make some judgements on the quality based on the images you see.

My opinion is that, while the tele-converter makes the lens quite dark, the effective 1200mm is simply wonderful! For a couple of hundred dollars you triple the focal length of your telephoto lens. Doing the same thing by means of a new lens would mean the Canon 1200mm F5.6 "L" lens which weighs in at 36 pounds and is 32 inches long (and it costs as much as many houses). In my book, the teleconverter is a great deal.
